Children gain invaluable wisdom and social skills during the many times that their parents give them attention at home.  Imagine if children could get the same benefits in a school classroom that they do at home.  Both parents and schools are more fully realizing the importance of parent involvement in education.  Parents want to be more connected with their children in order to help them. Furthermore, today, many public schools welcome parents into the classroom.

Example, in Michigan's Berrien County, a River Valley second grade class had a parent-student session, during the last hour of regular school hours, about every other Friday.  During the parent-student sessions, students and parents played math games, celebrated holidays, and explored the outdoors around the schoolyard.

In a River Valley Michigan class, during the fall season's Halloween holiday party, the four groups took turns playing the leaf collection board game.  Sometimes inside the classroom, the outdoor local environment can be studied.  The oak, maple, apple, and tuliptree leaves were collected in the immediate neighborhood. The leaves were brought into the classroom for a party game.  October 2007.

A Sustainable School
Imagine a school that is sustainable. 40 ways school can help foster connections between education, each child, society, culture, and nature: school routines that guide children to learn about their connection to family, to the immediate local society, and to the immediate local outdoors; school routines that guide children to learn how to live sustainable in their local community and to protect and enrich local natural habitats and resources; and more. www.z-hub.org/school/650imagine.html
